Abuse Reporting

What is abuse and how do I report it?

Abuse is anything that violates the Second Life Terms of Service and Community Standards which are agreed to when you first register for Second Life. There can also be additional terms set by a welcome area that you will have to obey.

If you witness an incident happening to another resident, you can also file an abuse report. Just make sure you give a full description of who the griefer/abuser is.

One way you can usually ward off griefers is to not respond to efforts to frustrate you. Instead, find an object you can sit on (right click the object, and select Sit) . The offenders will likely get bored and go onto another target — which would give you a good opportunity to file an abuse report!

  • Select Help > Report Abuse from the menus at the top of the window. The system takes a snapshot of what your camera sees at that moment.
  • The Abuse Report window appears, presenting you with a number of options.
  • If the snapshot will help clarify things, select the Include Screenshot checkbox at the top right, to attach what you saw when the window opened to the report.
  • If the problem is related to an object, click the blue button in the top left part of the window, and then on the offending object. Its location, name and owner information will automatically be included on the report.
  • Fill in the following fields.
    • Select what category of abuse you experienced. These options are self-explanatory.
    • Fill in the abuser name in the next box.
    • The location of abuse will already be shown.
    • Fill in a one line description of your situation — be brief and to the point, as it's the first thing Second Life customer service will see. A line like "John Smith — inappropriate language" is much better than "John was disturbing me"
    • Fill in specific details about your situation in the next box.
    • Click "Report Abuse".
