The World Map is a powerful tool for helping you to navigate in-world. With it, you can instantly teleport to any public Region, find land for sale, and determine the number of avatars in a Region before you arrive! Outlined below are the World Map's features and controls:
The World Map's legend allows you to distinguish between points of interest across Second Life. You can filter a type of map point by checking or unchecking the box next to its name.
Points of Interest
You: This icon represents your location in Second Life.
Home: The blue house icon represents your home location.
Classifieds: Shows the world locations of Classifieds listings. You can also search Classifieds by using the Classifieds tab in Search.
Person: Shows the locations of avatars on the Map, but does not provide identifying information. Large gatherings of avatars in a small space coalesce into a stack of green spots.
Infohub: A place where Residents can congregate and socialize. Infohubs are also known as Welcome Areas, where new Residents arrive after they complete Orientation Island. For more information on Infohubs, check out the article How to find Infohubs.

Other Map Functions
The World Map has several other useful functions for exploring and navigating Second Life. You can track your friends' whereabouts, teleport to one of your landmarked locations, or teleport directly to a Region by name!
The My Landmarks dropdown box contains a list of landmarks from your inventory. Select a landmark from the list to mark your destination, and then click the Teleport button to travel there instantly.
You can search for a Region by name by typing part of its name in the third text field on the Map and pressing the Search button. The Search Results frame shows all matching Region names; you can select one and mark it as a destination by clicking on it and pressing the Teleport button.
Pressing the Copy SLURL to clipboard button copies the SLURL of your current destination to your computer's clipboard. SLURLS are very useful for posting Second Life locations on web pages, in chat, or in emails.
On the main splash screen, you can choose the location to login to, right underneath your username.
If you access the Preferences menu, select the General tab, and you can see the first option to select your Start Location. You can type in the location of the region, or you can select your Home location.
You can tell OnRez to log you in at your home location, no matter where you were when you left. This is useful in many cases, such as if you always want to start the day at home, or if your last location is a region that's currently unavailable.
If you're in Second Life already: Load Preferences, select the General tab, and change the Start Location to "My Home".
You can tell OnRez to log you in at the exact point you were standing when you logged out. This is useful in many cases, such as if you (or the region you were in) recently crashed and you want to come back right where you left off.
If you're in Second Life already: Load Preferences, select the General tab, and change the Start Location to My Last Location".

In Second Life, you can think of Landmarks as being similar to Bookmarks or Favorites in a web browser. They record the three-dimensional position of a place inworld, so you can teleport back there conveniently when you want.
Landmarks are easily created by going to Here > Create Landmark Here. It'll appear in your Inventory > Landmarks folder automatically, saved for future use. You may not be able to set a region as a landmark if the owner of the land has disabled this feature, usually for privacy. Landmarks are created in the following format: parcel name, region name, coordinates. You can rename a Landmark if you wish but the actual destination will remain the same.
You can share landmarks fully and can give them our to any friend or resident. You can either drag the landmark onto that person's profile (identical to giving them an inventory item) or directly onto the avatar itself.
There are two basic ways to teleport to a landmark:
In your inventory you can create subfolders for your landmarks. However, f you use the World Map to access your landmarks, these subfolders are inaccessible, and the landmarks will instead be sorted alphabetically.

The Mini-Map is useful for helping you navigate around Second Life. It appears at the top right of your viewer. You can close it by selecting the top right arrow.
YELLOW DOT: You.
CONE OF LIGHT: Comes from the yellow dot and shows which direction you're facing.
GREEN DOTS: Other Residents of Second Life.
COMPASS: Helps you get oriented. North (N) is in a bluer shade than the other directions. If you spin around using the left and right arrows or A and D keys when the chat bar is closed, you will see the Mini-Map spin too.
DOUBLE-CLICKING ON THE MINI-MAP: Brings up the big World Map, showing more details about where you are.
RIGHT-CLICKING ON THE MINI-MAP: Lets you change the zoom level and Stop Tracking, which makes the red beacon and arrow pointing to a destination disappear.
As a resident in Second Life, there's always a map ready and waiting for you. You'll never really be lost.
Look at the top of the screen. It shows the name and coordinates of the region you're in. For example, "OnRez (128, 142, 21)". The mini-map will show your location. To get yourself back to a familiar location, either access one of your landmarks, or hit the Home icon to go to your familiar Home location.
This means you don't have permission to enter an area because it's either not open to the public or the owner of the land has set permissions to the land. There is also a (very distant!) chance you have been banned from the land in response to any misconduct that you might have partaken in while being there.
