Voice Chat

How do I know I can use voice chat?

Look at the bar at the top of the screen that states what region you're in. If you see a blue headset, it means the area is voice enabled!

If a green dot appears above your name as you are walking around, then you are properly set up for voice chat. If it happens to be on, you will see sound bars actively moving from the green dot when you speak.

To use it, make sure all your preferences are set correctly. Click the Gear icon on the bottom toolbar. This will open your preferences. Select the "Voice Chat" tab.

Where are the voice chat settings?

You can find the Voice Chat settings through the Preferences window. Click the Audio settings (looks like a little Gear) icon on the bottom toolbar, hit Command-P, or go to Edit > Preferences.

You have the options of Hearing Voice from the Camera position or Avatar. Pick one. You can use either Push-to-Talk mode automatically when the viewer starts up, or only Push-to-Talk when you hit a specific key. More specifically, you would either be voice chat active the entire time you're logged in, or you would use voice chat only when you hit a certain key. Select any key you'd like. Using any button on the keyboard not being used for another function is probably your best bet, such as Z or X.

The next screen will allow you to set up your input and output devices. If you have a USB headset plugged in, select those input/output settings. If you're just using the speaker on your computer, or prefer the default settings, leave the settings the same. You can also adjust your sound level. If sound is active, green squares will appear while you are speaking into your microphone.

Select "Finish" and you should be all set.

If you ever need to change your settings past this, select "Device Settings".

You can also disable voice chat by unchecking "Enable Voice Chat".

Do I need a headset?

If your computer has a built in microphone and speakers you should be able to use the Voice features of the OnRez Viewer. If not we suggest a headset to enhance the Voice experience. Second Life offers headsets through their partner. http://www.lindenlab.gbh.com/
